PHUKET: The Phuket International Academy Day School (PIADS) finished its annual Book Week on May 3, but its benefits will be felt throughout the year believes Diane Therrien, librarian and academic resource manager.

The idea is that Book Week promotes the love of reading. If it is fun, entertaining and fits all levels of abilities, it really works,” said Mrs Therrien.

Activities included sponsored reading, where students were given one month to read as many books as they could to raise money for the Phuket orphanage, Bahn Loong Pitak. The student who raised the most was Stuart MacPherson, who assembled a whopping B5,600.

The keenest reader meanwhile for 2013 was Elise Nguyen who read 143 books from August 2012 to the end of April.

Other activities throughout the week included a book hunt, where each year group was given 10 book covers to find, ‘Pyjama Day’, where older students created their own stories to read to younger year groups and ‘D.E.A.R – Drop Everything And Read’, where for 20 minutes students and staff alike were requested to drop everything and read.

Mrs Therrien said that despite the variety of different activities, the aim of Book Week remained the same, “The idea of Book Week is to promote the love of reading among students of all ages. It could be an e-book or paperback as long as they love reading.”

Mrs Therrien said that the PIADS Book Week will return next year as it is quickly turning into one of the highlights of the school year.

The event was a huge success. The children had lots of fun and thoroughly enjoyed all of the Book Week activities that were organised by the library staff, so when they think of the library they will have a positive image,” said Mrs Therrien.
