Phuket Navy launches search for Myanmar ship in distress, missing crew

PHUKET: The Royal Thai Navy and Phuket Marine Police have launched an air-sea rescue mission looking for eight crewman missing on board a Myanmar timber cargo ship bound for Penang.

The Myanmar timber cargo ship Aung Chat Sar was reported in distress 110 nautical miles west of Phuket at 5pm yesterday (Dec 29).

The Myanmar timber cargo ship Aung Chat Sar was reported in distress 110 nautical miles west of Phuket at 5pm yesterday (Dec 29).

Phuket Marine Police Chief Lt Col Panya Chaichana were notified of a distress call from the 27-meter-long vessel Aung Chat Sar, foundering 110 nautical miles west of Phuket at 5pm yesterday (Dec 29).

“The position given was 7º36'N and 96º36'E,” Col Panya said.

All ships in the area were notified to keep an eye out for the Aung Chat Sar and render assistance where possible, he said.

“A Naval search-and-rescue helicopter was dispatched this morning,” Col Panya added.

“They need help. The search for the missing crew continues today, he said.
