Phuket driver’s arm severed in accident while delivering tourists to airport

PHUKET: A man, who police have yet to confirm whether or not was working as an illegal taxi driver, had an arm severed in an accident while driving two Iraqi tourists to Phuket International Airport this morning (May 24).

The accident happened on Route 4026, which connects Phuket Airport to the island’s main artery, Thepkrasattri Rd, at 7am.

Police and rescue workers arrived to find a wrecked black Toyota Fortuner at the bottom of a five-metre-deep ditch after it had struck a roadside power pole.

The driver, Thawin Chaiponrit, 51, was trapped inside the vehicle.

Rescue workers used hydraulic cutters to free Mr Thawin and sped him to Thalang Hospital.

After five minutes of searching the undergrowth, rescue workers also found Mr Thawin’s severed left arm and rushed that to hospital also.

Iraqi tourists Mohammed Ali Alaa Hasan, 23, and Imran Shafiq, 32, escaped with only minor injuries, confirmed Lt Col Thanakarn Auchanaratsamee of the Sakoo Police.

“The vehicle was heading to Phuket International Airport,” Col Thanakarn said.

“When they arrived at the bend, the driver lost control of the vehicle and hit the guardrail by the side of the road. The car then hit a power pole and flipped over down into the ditch,” he explained.

“At this stage we believe that the driver was not familiar with the road. Also, this area is well known for accidents. We have yet to question the driver,” Col Thanakarn added.

Col Thanakarn made no mention as to any investigation into whether or not Mr Thawin was working as an illegal taxi driver, as the Fortuner was not registered as a commercial passenger vehicle.

Col Thanakarn also did not postulate whether Mr Thawin was speeding or under the influence of alcohol or drugs at the time of the accident.

Eagle; They just defend their actions with lame excuses.

The reason for most accidents are speeding. I have been to Phuket a few time and always encounter drivers speeding to a point where I always tell them to slow down. Something drastic needs to be done to these drivers putting lives of tourists in danger. Random testing of all sorts should be conducted at airports and checking of licenses. These drivers get off too lightly, but if it was a foreigner just accidentally knocking a car with a bike, court cases, fines and everything gets involved.

Another safe quality driver, just wait for the usual suspects to defend how good the locals drive here in Phuket!

Another day, another motorcycle death and this horrific accident. Just another day on phuket's roads .... good to hear the authorities a couple of days ago saying they are pleased with progress .....

“...At this stage we believe that the driver was not familiar with the road. Also, this area is well known for accidents..."

The guy was probably speeding because he wanted to get through an area that was dangerous and he wasn't familiar with.

Sounds rational to me.

And another serious accident on a road that was widened needlessly to become a Formula 1 racing track. (Except racetracks bank curves correctly.)

Seeing the photos, wow, how lucky were these 2 tourists.
The tourists have surely what to tell back at home.
At least about the speed of the car when the happening took place.

Wonder why the later found arm was 'rushed' to Thalang hospital.
That hospital has no doctors/facilities to attach again the arm to body.

And who, living on Phuket in position of a car, is not familiar with road route 4026?
And guess it was still to early in morning, before his breakfast, for the police officer or speeding could be the a reason for this accidents.
Well, we all know, we see the photos world wide.

"At this stage we believe that the driver was not familiar with the road. Also, this area is well known for accidents"

Exactly, drivers who ARE "familiar with this road" (i.e. taxi drivers) drive it dangerously and cause "accidents" (i.e. collisions, someone's to blame, guess who).

The 2 points are mute as they cancel each-other out, but they're both irrelevant anyway. The police should stop thinking up excuses in these cases and lay the blame firmly where it belongs, with the drivers. This is another clear case of dangerous driving causing injury (even if the driver did sustain the worst injury himself), that's illegal, enforce the law!

Same very boring story. Same as last
hours and hour before that. Just a simple one artical a week should be enough. " X number dies on phukets roads this week due to the police and governments inability to bring law and order to the roads" and then go on to real news stories that the peolpe actually want to see. These are just nothing stories.
