Patong taxi stand pulled down as Phuket campaign continues

PHUKET: Tourists watched fascinated this afternoon (June 24) as Patong Municipality staff, guarded by police and Navy Marines armed with semi-automatic weapons, started pulling down one of Patong’s most noticeable taxi salas.

The sala, along with a variety of scruffy shacks that lined the sidewalk opposite the Diamond Cliff Resort, came down easily after a backhoe was brought in to add to the human muscle.

Kathu police and marines from Tap Lamu Naval Base later strolled along Patong Beach talking with beach chairs renters to see whether they had any information, opinions or complaints about the clearing up of illegal activities on Phuket.

The Phuket News understands that one other taxi stand in Patong has already been destroyed, and there are more to come, but police and the Navy remained tight-lipped about details.
