Path cleared for election

Royal approval has been granted for the Thai government to dissolve parliament, paving the way for elections to be held early next month.

Tuesday 10 May 2011, 11:13AM

Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva made the announcement in a live television address tonight, signalling that parliament would be dissolved tomorrow (Tuesday), and announcing a tentative July 3 date for the national election.

HM King Bhumibol Adulyadej signed the decree to dissolve parliament this afternoon, following a decision by the Constitutional Court to pass three election related bills.

Both the bills and the royal decree will come into effect tomorrow when they are published in the Royal Gazette.
