The brakes on the Pegas Tours bus apparently failed as it went down the hill. Out of control, it hit Suriyawadee U-ma, 55, on her motorcycle.

“When we arrived, she had a broken right arm and severe injuries to her forehead and mouth,” said Sampawat Wannasangkam, a volunteer from the Patong Municipality Rescue Center.

After hitting Mrs Suriyawadee, the bus careered on down the hill, finally hitting a power pole in front of Wat Suwankiriwong. The driver ran away.

After first aid, Mrs Suriyawadee was taken to Patong hospital and then transferred to Bangkok Hospital Phuket.

Traffic on Phrabaramee Rd and Ban Mon-Nanai Rd were severely disrupted by the crash.
