Showcasing local heritage in its initial exhibition from March 14 to April 14, Island 6 looks to bring its signature sumptuous style to the island’s budding art scene.
According to a statement, “The Babas and Yayas of Huang Li Bai exhibition will depict and honour the diversity and background of the Peranakan people, while also staying true to the international complexity of the Island 6 collective.”
The Phuket ‘Babas’, as some members of the local Chinese community are referred to, have always revelled in innovation and the satisfaction that can be found in what is “mixed”.
They were the first people in the region to embrace Western culture, as is reflected in the Old Town architecture, whilst also introducing their traditional customs, such as the Chinese temples.
The natural desire to intertwine old and new, combing two cultures and ideas, and enjoy the fruits of this unison, is a core tenet of both the Peranakan and the Island 6 world perspective.
The exhibition promises to excite and entice, honouring traditional artistic values through the gallery’s signature modern electronic interaction, all the while staying true its intrinsic Chinese heritage.
'The Babas and Yayas of Huang Li Bai’ runs until April 14 at the Island 6 gallery in Royal Phuket Marina, just north of Phuket Town. 076 360 801; firstname.lastname@example.org; island6.org.
