New Intensive English Course at BIS Phuket

PHUKET: The new International Learning Centre (ILC) at British International School Phuket (BISP) has recently established a full-time Intensive English Course (IEC) to start in April 2013.

Monday 25 March 2013, 11:32AM

The main focus of the course is to prepare students between the ages of 11-15 years with the necessary English skills to enter BIS Phuket (in Year 7, 8, 9 and 10) or other international schools in Thailand or overseas.

BISP plan to run the IEC every term of the school year from Monday to Friday. Each student experiences intensive English language tuition of approximately 17 periods per week (17 hours) at various times throughout the day.

For the remaining periods, students are integrated into mainstream lessons for eight hours per week. The students work as a class, in small groups or individually, on work that is relevant to them.

As BIS Phuket has boarding facilities, IEC students have the option to live on campus whilst studying English.

The IEC programme aims to assist students not only to develop their language proficiency, but also to enhance their learning in content areas.

The students, once they have been accepted into BISP or another school’s mainstream, will thereafter be able to successfully access an international school’s curriculum whilst continuing their second language development.

The IEC students are assessed in relation to their progress through a number of internal and external tests. To receive a certificate of IEC completion, the student is to pass the Cambridge ESOL exam (KET/PET).

Students who successfully complete the course may then leave to study elsewhere, or re-apply for a place in the secondary school at BIS Phuket for the following term.

In the case of a student not passing the Admissions Test on a subsequent occasion, the student may continue taking the IEC for an additional school term to build their proficiency in English.

The first nine week IEC course starts on April 22, for more information, contact: ilc@bisphuket.ac.th
