Do you have any concerns about natural birth in Phuket?

Do you have any concerns about natural birth in Phuket?

Question: I have been living in Phuket for over two years now. I am planning to have my first baby here in Phuket in May. I would really like to have a natural birth but am concerned that it is not the first choice in Thai hospitals here. Is there any advice you could give me? Do you know of any midwives in Phuket that could help? The birth is a long way off yet but I’d like to be as prepared as possible.
Many thanks

Answer: Well, I usually get questions concerning keeping kids busy not bringing them into the world – but let me try. The international hospitals are more understanding regarding women’s individual birth plans. However at the time of writing this there are no birthing classes as prevalent in western countries.

Doctors will be your primary contact, not nurses or midwives. Midwives in western countries are often highly trained which may not be the case in Thailand.

However you can have a natural birth in Phuket and many have (including me). Some top tips:

  • Read as much as you can about birthing and begin writing a birth plan.
  • Start talking to your doctor ‘now’ about aspects of your birth plan – you will both become frustrated if your doctor discovers your intentions only prior to the birth.
  • Ensure your partner is on board as you will need the support of your partner in the birthing room.
  • And remember, your doctor is a qualified medical practitioner and the main priority is to ensure you and your baby are safe.
  • Take their advice but don’t be afraid to get a second opinion!
  • Join a social media network on the island and meet other women who can share advice.

If anyone has some more practical advice please contact me: info@phuketforkids.com so this information can be shared!
