Thai people will initially be able to access the internet free of charge in public areas as well as at state offices and educational institutions, said MICT head Anudith Nakornthap.
Free public wi-fi is an urgent policy of the Government. The first free wi-fi services will be available within three months and will be expanded to cover the entire country over the next four years, said Mr Anudith.
The Ministry continues to work on previous government initiatives to provide people with affordable internet services, said Mr Anudith, including a policy to hand out tablet PCs to students. The Ministry will be responsible for applications, knowledge base and internet network to support the operation of the devices.
Other internet technology initiatives currently overseen by the ICT Ministry include improving the country’s national disaster warning system and the suppression of lèse majesté websites. – NNT
