PHUKET: One of the world’s largest private yachts, the MY Le Grand Bleu arrived this week in Phuket.

Le Grand Bleu, built 12 years ago in Germany for American businessman John McCaw, it was later owned by Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich, who in 2006 gave it to his friend and business associate, Russian oilman Eugene Shvidler.

At 104 m in length, the floating palace carries an variety of toys including diving gear, jet skis, sailboats and even an 18-metre Sunseeker motor yacht and a 21-metre custom-built Dubois sailing yacht.

It currently ranks as the 24th-longest private yacht in the world. The biggest, at 162.5m is owned by (yes) Roman Abramovich and is, appropriately, called Eclipse.

Le Grand Bleu is powered by two 4,570-bhp Deutz engines, is capable of cruising at a speed of 15.7 knots (29 kmh). The crew of 65 can handle up to 20 guests, accommodated in 10 cabins.
