The store is planned for Bangkok Road, close to the Slaughterhouse intersection.

The President of the communities, Manu Kiewkram, said they plan to meet with Phuket Governor Tri Augkaradacha to call for his support in arranging a public hearing.

“We are concerned about the existing communities who have been earning their living in Phuket City, as well as traffic problems that will follow after the opening of the new Tesco,” said Mr Manu.

It is estimated that about 18 communities, comprising more than 300 people will join the public hearing, as well as a protest march against construction of the new Tesco

Mr Manu claimed that the new Tesco project is currently undergoing an Environmental Impact Assessment.

A spokesperson for Tesco-Lotus Thailand headquarters in Bangkok said the company could not comment at this stage but added that it would release information about the new store as soon as possible.
