It’s okay to have a beer on the beach, says Patong police chief

PHUKET: Kathu Police Chief Col Chaiwat Uikum has confirmed to The Phuket News that drinking beer on Patong Beach is okay by his officers, despite reports by beachgoers earlier today (Mar 7) that alcohol had been banned by the military.

One beachgoer raised the issue with The Phuket News, saying, “Two vendors on the beach told us that they were not allowed to sell alcohol anymore.

“They said the military had ordered the ban and that anyone found drinking alcohol on the beach would be arrested and fined.”

However, that understanding was news to Col Chaiwat, who this afternoon told The Phuket News, “Selling alcohol on public land – including the beach – is illegal, but we will not take any action against people drinking alcohol (in moderation) on Patong Beach.”

The Phuket News has yet to confirm the military’s latest understanding of the policy in Phuket.

The beachgoer noted his concern about the unclear state of the beach rules, as some rules are forced strongly, while enforcement of other rules – and depending on the beach where the rules are being enforced – vary.

“Tourists are not sure what we can do – and cannot do – anymore. It’s terrible, as this can stop a lot of people from coming to Phuket,” he said.

People can go to Surin or Laem Sing where you can do anything you want. The laws do not apply up here... except sometimes...but usually not. I think it depends on how far it is from payday and if the police have enough energy to go out and steal money from farangs.

Wow, being allowed to have a beer in the the beach! Great news!
Now the beachgoer can cross the Patong beach road in swimsuit to one of the many 7-Eleven shops and buy his beer there.
Of course just until dressing rules come up for visiting these shops across the road.

And now, how about the other Phuket beaches?
