Irish DJ is new breakfast co-host for Phuket’s Live 89.5

PHUKET: When Live 89.5’s new breakfast show host Dave O’Connor found himself on holiday in Thailand earlier this year, he had no idea he would be back only a few months later to work.

Irishman Dave joined the Live 89.5 team this week as the new ‘Wake Up’ breakfast show co-host alongside Kirsty Meyer, and as head of music, following the departure of Sam Clarke.

Dave brings a wealth of experience to the station, including 15 years working in radio. Most recently, he was the breakfast presenter for IRadio station, just outside Dublin, where he picked up two national radio awards for the best regional breakfast show of the year, and for the best entertainment inserts.

It was in July this year that he visited Thailand, taking in Koh Samui, Bangkok and Koh Phangan.

“When I was on Koh Phangan I kept seeing a DJ play on the beach every day. I really thought I would like to be that DJ. It was such a simple dream, but hopefully while I’m here I can get lots of DJ gigs.”

Months later he spotted the Phuket job advertised, and decided it was time for a change.

“Happiness isn’t about salary, it’s about waking up being happy with where you are and what you’re doing. Phuket is a new challenge for me and a new place to fulfil that desire.”

He hoped to take the popular breakfast show “to the next level” by picking up from where Sam left off, and planned to be “very interactive with the audience”.

“I’m really excited to be on air. The challenge I think is taking over from someone as popular as Sam, but it’s a challenge I look forward to.”
