In a Group D encounter, Argentina easily brushed aside a poor Mexico team 5-1. Argentina were touted as potential outsiders for the World Cup before the tournament and the South Americans were good value for their victory.

Italy laid down an early marker for the World Cup by decimating a woeful Australian team 9-1. Australia held out for the first 14 minutes but once Italy scored the first goal in the 15th minute they had no response.

Asia’s top team, Iran, caused a huge upset by coming back from two goals down to draw against the current European Champions and one of the World Cup Favourites, Spain. The two time World Cup champions were 2-0 up by halftime but the attacking nature of both teams meant the end to end game ended in a 2-2 draw.
