But as the attacks went on, staff at an Austrian zoo were forced to intervene in the marital dispute between the two giant tortoises after a mammoth 115 years together.
Happ Reptile Zoo even tried aphrodisiacs to put the passion back in a relationship, which started soon after they were born.
Now it is feared the 100kg tortoises will kill each other if they are left in the same pen.
Zoo boss Helga Happ said: “For some reason they can’t stand each other now but we hope they can make up.”
