Lt Col Jongserm Preecha of the Patong Police confirmed that he was notified of the man’s death by staff at the hotel in Kalim, north of Patong, at about 5pm.
“I arrived at the scene to find that the man* was staying in room number 123,” Col Jongserm said.
“The man’s body was lying on the sofa. The air conditioning, his mobile phone and laptop computer were all still turned on,” he said.
There no signs of a fight on the man’s body and no signs of a struggle in the room, Col Jongserm confirmed.
“We have yet to establish the cause of death, We are waiting for a hospital report on that. Until then, we have yet to conclude our investigation,” he explained.
Col Jongserm declined to give any further details, though Tourist Police confirmed to The Phuket News that the man had entered Thailand on May 22 and was permitted to stay until June 20.
According to the man’s passport, he was to celebrate his 67th birthday on June 16.
“I have reported the death to French consular officials so they can inform his relatives. His body was taken to Patong Hospital.” Col Jongserm concluded.
