According to the Phuket Road Accident Prevention and Reduction Operations Centre, the figures cover the period from Dec 30 to Jan 2, during the ‘Seven Days of Danger’ New Year safety campaign.

Of the four fatalities, two occurred in Mueang Phuket District and two in Thalang District, while no deaths were reported in Kathu.

Mueang Phuket recorded the highest number of accidents at 20 cases, followed by Thalang with 10 cases and Kathu with nine. Injuries were also highest in Mueang Phuket, with 23 injured persons, compared with 11 in Thalang and nine in Kathu.

Daily statistics show that the highest number of accidents occurred on Jan 1, when 16 accidents were reported, causing 18 injuries and three deaths. No fatalities were reported on Dec 30 or Jan 2.

Officials noted that motorcycles were involved in 38 of the 39 accidents, accounting for 92.68% of all cases, while one accident involved a car. Most accidents occurred on highways, followed by urban roads.

The most common causes of accidents were identified as speeding, accounting for 72% of cases, followed by drunk driving at 26%. Risky behaviour data also showed speeding as the leading factor, followed by failure to wear helmets and drunk-driving.

Accidents were most frequent during the late-night and early-morning hours, particularly between 12:01am and 3am, followed by 6:01am to 9am.

The majority of those injured were aged 25-34, followed by those aged 45-54. All four fatalities were Thai nationals, officials confirmed.

Phuket authorities reiterated calls for motorists to strictly follow traffic laws, particularly regarding speed limits, helmet use and drunk driving, as intensified enforcement and checkpoints continue throughout the remainder of the New Year holiday period.

The ‘intensive period’ New Year safety campaign will conclude at midnight Monday night (Jan 5).

According to national road-safety agency ThaiRSC, Phuket suffered 114 people killed and 27,502 people injured in road accidents throughout 2025.
