Floods clear but Phuket due for plenty more rain

PHUKET: Floods have cleared from all roads in Patong and other parts of Phuket inundated by heavy rain yesterday and early this morning, the Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Office reports.

However, the office warned, there is still a risk of more floods and possibly land slides if there is further heavy rain.

This seems highly likely. An official from the Southwest Coast Meteorological Centre told The Phuket News this morning, “The weather will become wetter and windier because of the storm now over central Thailand.

“We expect it to continue raining in Phuket throughout October because of a low pressure trough extending down to the upper south of Thailand. The weather will be particularly bad on October 7 and 8.”

He said that larger vessels such as big ferries should be safe enough going to sea but small boats all along the Andaman Sea should stay in port, especially those based in Ranong and Phang-nga provinces.

A total of 63.2 mm of rain was recorded in Phuket Town between 7am yesterday and 7am this morning. At Phuket International Airport, the rain was rather lighter, with 49.1 mm recorded in the same period.
