PHUKET: New Year’s resolutions are inspiring. Maintaining them can, however, be challenging. For those of you that have set yourself a challenge to improve your health and get into shape, here are a few guidelines that will help you achieve your goals.

Maintaining a healthy lifestyle and staying active as you age is really important. As previously indicated it is never too late to start no matter what age you are. If you have not been active for a while it would be best to get a medical check-up from your doctor prior to starting your fitness programme.

As we age our muscles weaken, bone density becomes less and we become short of breath just after walking up a flight of steps. You need to focus on improving these symptoms by proper exercise, nutrition and cardio workouts.

The advantages of joining a commercial gym/fitness centre are numerous. The obvious benefit of a gym is a chance to get fit. If you want to lose weight, gyms offer cardiovascular exercise options and workout areas for aerobic exercise. If you want to add muscle, you can use the gym’s strength-training equipment, such as free weights and resistance machines.

When joining a gym you should firstly receive professional advice on proper training methods and how to actually use the extensive array of exercise equipment. Gyms may offer various facilities that may include aerobic, spin bike, yoga or zumba classes that are taught by expert instructors.

Sauna and steam rooms provide relief and relaxation at the end of a strenuous workout. In addition gyms may offer swimming pool facilities where members can swim a few laps. Gyms are also a great place to socialise and meet people that have a similar interest in diet and exercise goals. Having contact with other people dealing with the same challenges you are facing can be a powerful motivator.
