Enraged creditor stabs man over B2,000 debt

PHUKET: Piya Chanyakan, 26, from Chacheongsao Province, was rushed to hospital on Thursday afternoon (September 6) after being stabbed in the stomach and then clubbed with a piece of wood.

Called to the scene close to the Koon Kao Pleng Karaoke on Patak Rd in Karon, police and rescue workers found him lying in a pool of blood, surrounded by a large crowd of onlookers. Lying nearby was a 30-cm piece of wood.

He was rushed to Vachira Phuket Hospital where he is recovering.

The suspect in the stabbing was named as Wootikrai Namwongs, 20, employed as boat-boy on a parasail boat.

Wootikrai – who later surrendered to police – said he was an acquaintance of the victim and admitted stabbing him with a pair of scissors. Police questioned and then freed the suspect.

According to police, Wootikrai told them he had previously loaned Piya B2,000, but whenever he asked for repayment, Piya “gave him the cold shoulder”.

On Thursday, Wootikrai was riding his motorcycle when he saw Piya. So he stopped and once again asked about his B2,000. “Don’t bother me now,” Piya replied. “I’m talking on the phone. Have you no manners? Why are you bothering me about money now?”

Wootikrai said that, enraged by this, he stabbed Piya once in the belly with a pair of scissors, before fleeing. Later, realising that the police would be looking for him, he decided to turn himself in.

Police noted his statement in their log and allowed him to leave. They said he would be called in for further questioning after they had taken a detailed statement from the victim. He would be booked then, they said.
