English woman, 68, fights for life in Phuket hospital after car accident kills son, husband

PHUKET: An appeal to Thailand’s expat community has been launched to raise donations for 68-year-old Rose Weatherill, from England, who is fighting for her life at a hospital in Phuket from injuries sustained in an accident that killed her son and husband.

Gary Libby, a close friend of the family for years, has set up the fundraiser on the Thai crowdfunding platform Weeboon.com.

The appeal is to raise funds to help Rose Weatherill back to full health after the tragic accident.

“Rose is really fighting for her life in Thailand and we need to give her as much support as we can,” said Mr Libby.

“Her son David married his beautiful wife back in 2006 and raised her two children as his own. David’s elderly mother and father came out to Thailand to spend some time with David, his wife and children.

“On April 21, after a day out at Surat Thani, their pickup truck was involved in an accident with a lorry and trailer unit,” he explained.

“Mrs Weatherill’s injuries included a broken pelvis, fractured ribs and spine, plus chest compression and head trauma. Her husband Arthur, 81, and son David, 54, died from their injuries.

“Rose was rushed to Surat Thani Hospital after the crash, where she stayed for 11 days before being moved to Bangkok Hospital Phuket, which is closer to where David’s wife lives.

“In addition to the injuries Rose suffered, she has had operations to remove bed sores and has been given a tracheotomy to assist her breathing,” he said.

Any money raised will be used to help pay the rising medical costs, which at present are close to B400,000, he added.

“Should there be any monies left over from the final medical bill then the outstanding amount will be donated to another worthy cause,” Mr Libby assured.

“I have known Dave and his family for many years, he was always willing to help others, now it’s his friends turn to try and help his family.

“Back in England we are raising money to help with cost of have a nurse attend to Rose 24/7 and also help reduce the size of the medical bill.

“In advance, I would like to thank the Weeboon Community for any help that they can offer,” he said.

According to the Weeboon’s policy, the funds collected will go directly to the victim Rose Weatherill and will help to handle her hospitalisation and to cover the costs of her medical bills that have already reached B400,000.

Donations to support Rose Weatherill can be made here.

Indeed, a tragic accident.
My condolences for the family members who lost their life.
I wish mrs Rose strength and a complete recovery.

It is good a fundraiser has been established. We can support that.

As Thailand is well known to be very dangerous on the roads, is it not time tourists realize not to travel to Thailand without a good and sufficient Travel & accident insurance?

After all, if one has the money for Thailand ticketing, traveling, accommodation, etc, than the premium for a travel health & accident insurance should be not a burden.

One can simply not go, or be in Thailand without a good covering health & accident insurance.
We see that time after time.

A information obligation for travelagents in home countries, and a subject that needs attention of thai authorities.
Perhaps obliging proof of insurance to show at thai embassies and to thai airport immigration officials upon arrival?
