Duke’s: a noble new dining hangout in Phuket Town

PHUKET: A new bar and restaurant in the Old Town is designed to cater to foreign tourists and expatriates.

Duke’s is the creation of Bangkokians Leilani Chiaravanond and Vattanee “Jun” Srikraivin, and quietly opened on December 28 on Ratsada Rd.

The pair also own Anna’s bar just opposite. While Anna’s caters more to the Thai market, Leilani and Jun want Duke’s to attract foreigners, hence it features a menu including international, Japanese, Thai, Korean and fusion dishes. Customers are welcome to order from both menus

They also say Duke’s offers a more relaxed “after work drinks” alternative to the bustling Anna’s.

The beverage menu includes around 30 or so drinks created specially for Duke’s by a famous Bangkok mixologist. These are priced at B250, while Guinness is on tap for B270 a pint.

Duke’s also scores major points for its industrial-chic design, with strong use of wood and metal.

The inside of the former optical shop has been stripped out and mostly brought back to its original interior from around 90 years or so ago.

A notable new addition is a huge steel spiral staircase, which was purchased from Bangkok’s Chatuchak Market for B1,000. When they have the time, the pair love to stroll the antique markets of the capital, and bring their finds back to Phuket.

The food ranges in price from B120 to B350, with most dishes positioned around the B200 mark. Standouts include the penne pasta with cream and mushroom sauce and braised pork (B220), chicken Caesar salad with home-made dressing (B280), and chicken quesadillas (B220).

For us though, top prize goes to their fish and chips (B180, pictured above). The local fish, similar to sea bass, is coated in beer batter and then deep-fried and served with crinkle cut fries and tartare sauce.

One of the few places in Phuket Town to serve the dish, it gets 10 out of 10 from this Kiwi reviewer.

Duke’s, 14 Ratsada Rd, Phuket Town (next to Brasserie). Open Tuesday-Sundays, 6pm-midnight. 087 389 5436.
