Drunk New Yorker arrested after attacking vehicles in Phuket

PHUKET: A drunk American man was taken into police custody after causing a minor traffic incident in northern Phuket early this morning (Oct 12). Police said the man, identified as American national Stephen Leonard, was on foot trying to flag down a vehicle to take him to the airport, before he obstructed traffic on the road and damaged several vehicles.

Tha Chatchai Police Lt Thanom Thongpan said he received a call from a local resident at 5:30am reporting that a drunk foreigner was running around frantically on the north bound lanes of Thepkrasattri Rd smashing the windows of passing vehicles that were forced to stop when he walked into their path.

He also stood in front of a truck, forcing the driver to stop in the middle of the road, blocking traffic and leaving only one lane open for motorists.

The incident happened in front of the Klua Muang Mai restaurant in Mai Khao said police.

Responding to the call Lt Thanom arrived on the scene with fellow officers and approached a group of local residents who had restrained the intoxicated American man on the side of the road.

The man was named by police as Stephen Leonard, 38, an American citizen from New York.

Police said they struggled to bring the uncooperative Mr Leonard into custody before taking him to Tha Chatchai Police Station.

Police said added that a large Hino truck, driven by Wanlop Thongked, 36, was found with minor damage to its side, along with a damaged Toyota pickup truck, driven by Sakrin Saard, 30.

Lt Thanom said that, according to Mr Wanlop, the man came onto the road out of nowhere and blocked his vehicle. Mr Wanlop said he slammed on his brakes suddenly, which destroyed the suspension and drive shaft of the truck.

The driver of the Toyota pickup, Mr Sakrin said he was also heading north when the man jumped onto his vehicle, hitting the window, and threw an empty alcohol bottle which smashed his window.”

Lt Thanom Thongpan said a third vehicle involved in the incident had left the scene by the time police arrived, but later reported to Tha Chatchai Police Station after dropping passengers at Phuket International Airport.

Lt Thanom Thongpan confirmed that the man was drunk and that the American Embassy had been notified of the incident.

Mr Leonard paid a fine B200 and was ordered to pay for the damage he caused to the vehicles before being released from custody.

He has been charged with public intoxication and damaging people’s property.

More bad behaviour from a bad farung giving the good farungs who live in Phuket a bad name. Lock up and deport.

How is a 200 baht fine going to deter anyone?

Action and reaction, Hahahaha.
Fined, police drove him to airport, as nr 1 through Immigration in departure lounge, not in a 2 hour queuing up line !

Nice for the thai driver to test his car, slammed his brakes, and that destroyed the suspension and drive shaft of the truck. hahahaha.
Even other thai would not believe him. Great joke.

Boy, a real class act, this one. Well, good to see the Yanks weigh in on the "Foriegn A-holes in Thailand" stage, as I was starting to think they were becoming 100% "quality" tourists. I'm glad the corny police nailed him with a horrendous fine of 200 baht (about $6 USD). That'll send chills through the future Americans that think they can come here and act up withou...

Exemplary behavior from a foreigner once again - I suppose he is one of the "good guys" contributing positively to our Kingdom?

Bjay | 12 October 2016 - 16:40:32

What an idiot letting down his fellow countrymen! Best once he has paid for the damage he has caused & deported! As regards to the truck which when braking hard that vehicle should never have been on the road!An emergency braking ought not to have caused such damage to any vehicle?
