PHUKET: A two-hour downpour left roads in Phuket Town and surrounding areas flooded this morning (May 30). Police issued warnings urging motorists to exercise caution while driving through any floodwaters.

Most of the floodwaters were expected to subside naturally, but teams were deployed to heavily affected areas to help pump excess water from the roads.

The downpours today came as the Phuket office of the Thai Meteorological Department (TMD) warns of more heavy rain and thundershowers for the coming week.

The TMD warned of thunderstorms and isolated heavy rain across 60% of the Andaman coast provinces. Wind speeds during thunderstorms are forecast to reach up to 35km/h and waves are to reach up to two metres tall.

The heavy weather is forecast to continue through to next Thursday (June 4), the TMD noted in its forecast.

The Phuket News witnessed sevreal lightning ground strikes as the heavy storm cloud passed overhead this morning. People are urged to stay indoors while such severe storm clouds pass over the island.

Jor12, mans stupidity is often reflected in oneself, but when it comes to the annual floods, this is mainly due to man's stupidity and inability to either cope, or mitigate, in this case it's also the inability to function as an honest non-corrupt governing body.

Jor12 | 01 June 2020 - 09:41:05

R2...get use to nature and what it does and what it can do. Examples abound of mans stupid attempts to tame natural phenomena to no avail or make matters worse.

Jor12 | 01 June 2020 - 04:05:39

haha...underpasses dirty! That's a new one

jamesphuket | 31 May 2020 - 20:48:34

There are no floods on this estate as it was built by a private company for profit, great as we live in houses which are flood free.

I drive out of the estate onto the public roads (In Kathu, Kathu) to see flooded roads.

The difference, they were built by the local council.

The more they flood the more they need to be fixed and fixed again..... and I assume lots of payoffs are involved ?

Pascale, you don't HAVE to read anything, you choose to.

LALALA | 31 May 2020 - 18:09:59

Maintenance and cleaning ? This are 2 things which are not available in LOS.... you only need to step out of your house or apartment... it can be seen everywhere.

Hermann1 | 31 May 2020 - 17:00:54

I see many underpasses dirty inside. They are waiting to become a big pool.No maintenance cleaning wise. Not the first time i write about it.Typical laziness/short sightedness from handsitting officials.

Pascale | 31 May 2020 - 10:21:44

Clearly they didn't enlarge the drains etc. to keep the whinger busy.Same with all other upgrades. And so we have to read the same complaining comments for many more years.Exciting.

Rorri_2 | 31 May 2020 - 08:49:08

Guys, I don't know what is wrong with you two, every year the rain comes...yes, and that is the problem, after many years they still haven't enlarged the drains, installed adequate pumps, sluice gates etc... just most words. Why do you guys simply want to pick on others, and deny the truth.. ah business reasons, money blinds you.

Phuket town shop owners were complaining about the deserted shopping streets ( no buyers). Now they can look forward for continuing in that as streets stand under water after just a 2 hour rainfall only, which is normal during wet season and should have been anticipated on. Seen the vegetation growing here and there out of the sewer roasters? And that all because of laziness/short sightedness.

ThorFinger | 30 May 2020 - 21:08:15

Would these flooded streets be deemed a 'beach'? Am i allowed to go wading? I know, but i'm getting desperate for a swim...keeping well away from others of course.

Jor12 | 30 May 2020 - 20:39:35

Yep...in the drought period it's the lack of water. In monsoon it's the over abundance of water. During the day there is too much sunlight and night it's too dark. so yes, pathetic

DeKaaskopp | 30 May 2020 - 19:14:18

It doesn't matter how long the downpour was or how heavy. It doesn't matter if they had just cleaned the sewers, canals. The serial moaner will blame them for every flooding. At least here we still have the "old normal". Pathetic !

Rorri_2 | 30 May 2020 - 16:53:43

Ah, the annual floods, that get "fixed" every year.

Kurt | 30 May 2020 - 15:20:37

A 2 hr downpoor, and half of Phuket under water. One can't make it up. Many times last few months I asked or Phuket was prepared for this. Or ditches, sewers, canals were cleaned! Well, obviously not! If done properly we would not see such a flooding after just 2 hrs rainfall. Pathetic.
