The number of foreign arrivals in October totalled 2.72 million, up 20.92% from a year ago, Tourism and Sports Permanent Secretary Pongpanu Svetarundra announced yesterday (Nov 20).

Last month, most foreign tourist arrivals were from East Asia, followed by visitors from Europe, South Asia, and North and South Americas respectively, Mr Pongpanu noted. (See story here.)

The Chinese remained the largest group, followed by the Malaysians and the Laotians, while the largest spenders were the Chinese, Russians and Malaysians, respectively.

From January through October, tourist arrivals totalled 28.8mn, an increase of 6.7% year-on-year.

The Ministry of Tourism of Sports last month rounded down its expected number of foreign tourists this year to 33-34mn, compared with an earlier forecast of 35mn.

From January through September this year, domestic tourists generated B695.2 billion in tourism revenue for the economy, up 6.3% on the same period of 2016, Mr Ponganu added.

In 2016, there were a record 32.6mn foreign visitors to Thailand. Tourism accounts for 12% of the economy, Mr Pongpanu noted.

Imagine how much money would be made if the nationality percentages were as they were 4+ years ago.

Of course, Thailand started taking away things that western tourists desired 4 years ago. Beach side shops, bars, restaurants, beach chairs and umbrellas.

And, they fight to keep the things most western tourists don’t like. Unsafe beaches (Jet-skis, speedboats, no lifeguards). Dangerous roadway. Unsafe and violent tuk-tuks.

It's notable that the numbers for non-Asians aren't up there. No Europeans or Australians. Scandinavians used to be #1 – they’re gone now. And, Thailand complains about the Chinese pre-paid “budget” tourist who make up the big volumes. I guess they want to get rid of them, too.

Ministry of Tourisme and TAT are always playing a pep talk figure game.
The big non trusted factor is: ..."Tourist Arrivals"..

It is about time Thai Government gives a definition of what is a 'tourist arrival/departure'.

Well, consider it as pep-talk.
Perhaps small hotel/guesthouse owners can tell here or they feel happy with occupancy rate.
I know that at Phang Nga, north of Phuket, things are very slow this high season.
There are now small hotels with 12-16 rooms with only 1 room occupied. Normally yearly all occupied by Scandinavian people.

Of course there is a drop off in European visitors. They have read the reports of how dangerous it is to be here. It does not bother the Chinese judging by your news reports
