Dancing Phuket officials help save boatmen

PHUKET: In the latest in uniformed song-and-dance performances, the lads and lasses of the Marine & Coastal Resources Research Centre, who run the aquarium at Cape Panwa have posted a “Happy New Year” video on Youtube, set to the song 'Sawatdee Pee Mai' by famed Thai singer Thongchai ‘Bird’ McIntyre.

Thanet Munnoy, the director of the centre, said he wanted to “send happiness to everyone”.

He also hoped the video would encourage people to exercise, and to preserve the island’s environment and beautiful views as long as possible.

The video gained additional drama video when – as the officers filmed a dance scene on a pier – they spotted a long-tail boat upside-down nearby, with two men clinging to it.

The dancing officers promptly called the Royal Thai Navy who sent a speedboat to pluck the boatmen from the water. Both were fine after their rescue. The rescue is immortalised at the end of the video.
