The crowd assembled about 10:30 am, led by Kwanta Chaiyasit, 43, who also brought her son, 26-year-old Ekasit.
Ekasit, his mother said, is employed at an herbal and perfumed products centre in Baan Takrai, Cherng Talay.
He had been set upon about 1 am the previous night at the Nam Fon Snooker Parlour in Baan Bang Jo, and after being beaten and slashed with a knife, he required 15 stitches in three fingers of his right hand and 20 stitches in the left side of his head.
Mrs Kwanta said her son’s attacker was an “Isarn language-speaking construction contractor living in the area”.
She told a reporter, “My son was playing snooker with the construction contractor about 1 am this morning at Nam Fon’s shop.
“After playing, they quarrelled loudly, and the contractor pulled a knife, slashing and stabbing my boy. Then he smacked Ekasit in the head with a gun, and pointed it at his head in a threatening manner.”
Terrified, Kwanta fell to her knees and begged for Ekasit’s life. “I told him to take mine instead,” she said, “which mollified him, so he didn’t pull the trigger.”
Instead he turned his anger against Ekasit’s Honda Scoopy motorcycle, “damaging it heavily before making off”.
Duty officer Pol Lt Col Wacharint Jiratikanlawiwat reported the complaint to Thalang superintendent Pol Col Witoon Kongsudjai, then recorded it in the station’s daily log as evidence for use in tracking down and pursuing charges of attempted murder and property damage against the suspect.
The contractor’s name was not made public but, satisfied with the police response, the crowd broke up and went home.
Pol Lt Col Wacharint Jiratikanlawiwat said that his office would request a warrant from the Provincial Court “so that the culprit can be called to hear charges against him”.
He added that Investigation Division officers would be assigned to “gather information” and “track down the perpetrator”.
