Police said 31-year-old Chinese tourist Sheng Caoliang went swimming at Karon Beach with his friend, despite red “no swimming” flags down the beach.

Lifeguards warned the two men before they entered the water but they did not comply. They entered the water, and were then swept away by strong waves.

Mr Sheng’s friend was rescued and was not injured, but Mr Sheng was swept away out of sight. His body was found today, several bays south at Kata Beach. There were no signs of trauma, and the man’s body was taken to Vachira Hospital for an autopsy.

Yesterday, a Chinese tourist drowned in the waters around Racha Yai island, and on Saturday (September 28), Russian expat diver Denis Lipatov, 39, drowned while spear fishing in the waters of Racha Noi.
