Tom Travers says he and his Thai girlfriend Jen Khamsorn were subjected to an “unprovoked attack” by a group of Russians at Catch Beach Club, Surin. Mr Travers, originally from Canada, was left with a cheek fractured in three places, while Ms Jen suffered a broken nose. Both remain in Bangkok Hospital following surgery.
“It is unfortunate that Catch Beach Club on Surin Beach, like many other public venues in Phuket, witnessed disrespectful and violent behaviour,” the statement from Catch management said.
“We are thankful to the authorities for the prompt reaction and are hopeful and committed to be part of a common effort to promote a safer island life for the long term benefit of Phuket’s reputation.
“We wish to extend to both Khun Jen and Tom a fast and full recovery and look forward to welcome them back soon on Surin Beach.
Today, police are expected to interview the two Russians believed to be involved – Ilya Kononenko, aged 28, and Evgenyi Sopatenko, aged 25. Both are from Primorskyi province in the Russian Far East, the capital of which is Vladivostok.
