Becoming Legends

Local young rockers Legends of Siam have been quietly busy in recent months. The band released their debut album ’This Means War’ at the end of February with a raucous show at the Hard Rock Café in Phuket. In May they were featured in an article in the famed American publication The Wall Street Journal, and now they are making inroads with radio in target local and international markets.

In May they were featured in an article in the famed American publication The Wall Street Journal, and now they are making inroads with radio in target local and international markets.

“Radio is very important for any band to grow their fan base” says guitarist Blaze KC, “and we are very fortunate to have the support of our local radio station Live89.5.” he continued. The band’s drummer Rannze Davies adds “It’s not just in Phuket, we are also getting played in other parts of Thailand and in South Africa too.” South Africa is a huge rock market and the band’s latest single ‘Writing My Name’ has been taken up by Campus and Regional stations across the country. Similarly stations in Pattaya, Phuket and Bangkok are starting to play Legends of Siam.

“There are other markets that we are looking at as well, but we don’t want to bite off more than we can chew,” Blaze concluded. So how did the band get to this point? “We practice a lot” says vocalist Gemma Kealy.

“We also play a lot, and we all take lessons,” added bassist Destiny Star, a point confirmed by the rest of the band.

“Gemma takes private vocal and guitar lessons, Destiny takes bass lessons, and I take lessons with three different guitar teachers,” Blaze said.

“Rannze takes some lessons in other instruments like piano and guitar, and she also teaches drums and vocals,” he continued.

“It’s a lot of hard work,” Rannze adds, “but taking lessons and practicing a lot allows us to play songs that we would not normally be able to play, like Iron Maiden’s ‘The Trooper’ or Led Zeppelin’s ‘Rock and Roll’. We continually push ourselves to improve because we want to be doing this for the rest of our lives.”

Watching the band perform live is testament to the hours that they put in learning and practicing their craft. The band has an open invitation to play at one of Phuket’s premier live venues, the Hard Rock Café in Patong. On this stage they have supported such mega acts as Hugo and Paradox.
