The nation and world were shocked by the brutal assault of a visiting British family punched to the ground by four allegedly drunken thugs on Songkran Day in Hua Hin. (Hua Hin Municipality video grab)

Though still haunted by the assaults which left them and their son lying bloodied and unconscious on a street in a Hua Hin resort district, Lewis Owen, 68, and his wife Rosemary, 65, managed to smile when they were visited yesterday by Orasa Awutkhom, chief of the Prachuap Khiri Khan tourism office.

They were preparing to testify before the court after the couple earlier gave police accounts of what happened in the early hours of the first day of the Songkran festival on April 13.

Police will escort the pair to the court at 1:30pm, Prachuap Khiri Khan police chief Kasana Chamsawang said.

The four suspects each face jail terms of between six months and 10 years if they are found guilty on charges of physical assault causing severe injuries.

The attack started when the couple’s 43-year-old son, Lewis John Owen, accidentally bumped into Suphattha Baithong, one of the suspects, in Soi Bintabhat in Prachuap Khiri Khan’s Hua Hin district, an investigation found.

The Owens have blurred memories of what happened after the initial contact.

But CCTV footage shows Mr Suphattha, 32, pushing Lewis Owen Jnr to the ground.

As his parents tried to stop the scuffle, Mr Suphattha and his three friends punched the three in the face, kicked their bodies and stomped on their faces.

The other suspects are Chaiya Jaiboon, 20, Siva Noksri, 20, and Yingyai Saengkhamin, 32.

A video clip of the attack, which went viral online and made headlines overseas, was later seen by the victims after they recovered from their head and brain injuries.

Police are searching for whoever leaked the footage of the attack and plan to charge them for dealing another blow to the country’s already battered tourism image.

The video shows Thais dealing out to foreigners shocking and cruel attacks which “have left a huge impact on the victims’ minds”, Ms Orasa said.

Prachuap Khiri Khan Governor Thawi Naritsirikun has set up a committee to improve safety for Thai and foreign tourists.

Vigilance will be tightened in Hua Hin district and Pak Nam Pran in Pranburi district, which are well known for their beaches, he said.

@Christy Sweet
If you watch the video carefully - you'll notice that the two protagonists are bickering together at the outset - they part - and the drunker one - with bottle in hand walks into the Son. Drunkenly, and perhaps still seething from some sting insult - he vents his frustration by backtracking and pushing the Son in the back - where he went on to fall and hit his head on the edge...

Is this the same Christy Sweet as the 'Horse" story commenting? Heaven forbid. Spare Phuket.

How long did they get locked up for? What was the punishment, if any?

Christy Sweet | 18 May 2016 - 08:17:44

It's Me, That's the same video as was initially put out which I have watched many times in slow motion. Why authorities ignored the Owen family's first volley of assault upon two separate Thai men, I do not know. You might point out the two other foreign men - one in white who tries to calm the Owens, and walks away when they refuse, and another in a striped shirt also contributing to...

This shows a different edge to this story

I never really knew the jaw dropping extent of media censorship and manipulation until this incident. Will the Owens be charged for their assaults clearly shown in portions of the video deleted out of the Daily Mail site? Lewis Jr. appears to touch a man on his chest as he passed. The man pushes Jr. who appears to trip over Ms. Owens causing him to hit his head. Ms Owens leaves him on the ground...

The police should get busy. This attack on the Brits is NOT isolated as they try to say. Here is another group punks attacking a young Thai Girl. DO SOMETHING !!!

LES | 02 May 2016 - 23:49:18

Thank god for whoever did leak this CCTV footage, so the world can see how brutal and disgusting this attack was. As for the police trying to charge someone for this, why ? its only right that people see whats happened. Do your job now via the justice system and get these thugs jailed for as long as possible, and show that tourists can be protected when on holiday.

Rich 44 | 02 May 2016 - 20:44:28

I've seen a lot of punks in my life. There are no words for these. No matter how many tattoos each one gets or how many grandmothers/grandfathers/farrangs they kick in the face they will never become men. The police should be protecting folks, not wasting time looking for the person who released that video. How about going after these criminals?

bustermanidogs | 02 May 2016 - 19:36:37

I can't believe the police want to charge the person who put the video on the internet! What for, reporting the truth? Is it illegal now to let people know what really happened? How then, with this reaction from the government, whom obviously would have prefered no one to see the 'Factual evidence', can anyone ever believe anything that they say? Yes, the video will affect others from ...

Richard Vickers | 02 May 2016 - 15:19:32

I agree with the comments below, these punks have done more damage to the Thai tourist industry in 5 minutes than all other events of the last year combined....or close, kinda. Without a doubt, the last punk that kicked the poor elderly woman in the face, then stood there puffing his scrawny little chest like some tough guy, should be sent off for 10 years, and hopefully, some real prison tough g...

simon01 | 02 May 2016 - 11:34:06

The trial should be be very short as the world can see exactly what happened. 2 days and all 4 should be in jail for the next 10 years and massive compensation to be paid to all three. 1 million from each attacker minimum as thats a farrang would have to pay if the roles were reversed.

Robin Lee | 02 May 2016 - 11:25:58

Should give them a maximum 10 years jail to prevent such hooligans to think twice, thrice before they even think of assaulting anyone, tourist or locals. 6 months woul dbe too lenient for such a heinous crime, especially to defend less elderly. The Thai law hands out tough punishments for cruelty to animals, thus such cruelty to humans, especially to elderly, should have heavier punishments.

malczx7r | 02 May 2016 - 11:15:02

Shocking, charging those who leaked the video! If the police enforced law and order more then maybe these attacks wouldn't happen as they'd know they would get prosecuted for behaving in this manner, if it hadn't been for the leaked CCTV footage, I doubt they'd never been caught!! I hope the guy who kicks the old lady in the head gets 10 years!!
