Entitled ‘Love is the reason’, the exhibition, which opened on April 19, features nearly 30 of the aspiring artist’s recent works – 18 large paintings, 10 small ones and a sculpture – and its driving theme, as the title suggests, will be centred around what is arguably the strongest human emotion of all.
“The focus isn't on human or romantic love, necessarily,” Nok told The Phuket News, “but more about having, or forming a love for something and the process in pursuing it... following your dreams.”
Sub-themes to be contrasted in her works include “positive versus negative” and “walls versus waves”.
Nok explained that such elements will shape and frame the extent, outcome and experience of love, be it with other humans or with one’s personal interests, ambitions and dreams.
For instance, one of her main featured paintings features a subject who is holding a book and has a brightly illuminated cloud for a head. The book has small ladders climbing up into it and out of it.
“This is essentially me reading myself... pursuing what I like and love, finding the light – the way. The ladders represent the path to climb up to reach it... the bright streak on top of the book represents my wave of light... passion,” Nok explains.
Internal love besides, romantic love won’t be completely overlooked in her exhibition, she insists.
“Love is a very strong emotion. It can inspire or it can demotivate. Love between humans stems from the internal love each of us has within – depending how it’s framed and channelled, the result can be extreme bliss or extreme disappointment. I want to teach these concepts through my art,” she said.
Born in Singburi province in Central Thailand, Nok studied art at the Faculty of Fine Arts Chiang Mai University from 2001 to 2006, from where she graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts, with a Major in Painting and Minor in Sculpture.
In 2005, Nok was awarded awarded a scholarship by the Ministry of Culture (MOC) to put on an exhibition in Bangkok. The Ministry also paid for Nok to visit the US, on a short trip to discover new art techniques and paint some ‘great American landscapes’.
Love is the Reason shows at Villa Royale’s VR Gallery from April 19 to June 30.
