Appeal for O-negative blood donations

PHUKET: Vachira Phuket Hospital’s blood bank has made an appeal for donations of type O-negative blood to save the life of a 17-year-old Itipon Sailek, badly injured in a motorbike smash on Saturday (September 8).

Itipon has multiple breaks in one leg and internal injuries that are still bleeding. Without blood supplies, however, surgeons cannot operate to stop the bleeding.

To give blood, either go to the hospital or call 076-361-234 ext 0.

Apart from Itipon’s case, the hospital needs more O-negative blood for other patients, along with B-positive and O-positive.

Donated blood can be kept for about six weeks, after which it is no longer usable, so constant fresh supplies are always needed.

The recent public appeal for A-negative blood for Frenchman Jerome Heras, 37, badly hurt in a bike crash on September 3, was successful.

Through transfusion Mr Heras received six units of donated blood – 2.7 litres – which the hospital says was enough.

He is now in a stable condition, though still in intensive care.
