A two-minute and 40 second video clip of the angry taxi driver punching the hotel's staff had gone viral after it was posted on a Thai-language Facebook (translated: Phuket Community page) by user Petch Dimond. The video was posted with the message: “Staff call tuk tuk to take tourists to the shopping mall for B200, Taxi driver upset and slap Holiday Inn staff... this is outrageous.”

The clip shows hotel staff leading a group of foreigners to a tuk tuk in front of the taxi driver. The driver then approaches a staff member and, after a few moments, begins to assault him.

Kathu Police Lt Col Suthichai Tienpo said the incident happened at 12:40 pm on January 12 in front of the Holiday Inn Hotel on Taweewong Rd in Patong. The victim,Tawatchai Khawnchum, 38, Human Resource Director at the hotel, filed a complaint after he was injured in the face.

Lt Col Suthichai said, “After the investigation we were able to identify the suspect as 50-year-old Chamni Khaidam,a taxi driver who is frequently stationed in front of the hotel. Chamni turned himself in to police the next day (Jan 13) to face assault charges.

"Mr Tawaichai said that the tourists wanted the tuk tuk so he called it for them which made Chamni angry and he punched him. Chamni said he was upset when he saw hotel staff chose to call a tuk tuk when a taxi was right there," said Lt Col Suthichai.

Imagine if Phuket had a Songthaew baht bus loop system the same as in Pattaya, Krabi etc.. where you pay 10 to 20 baht to travel miles and get off by ringing the bell. Patong would be a far better place with this system - no more ripoff fares, acts of violence..

So, the taxi driver was upset, and than you just go to molest people?
I hope Mr Santi, director of Phuket Tourisme is upset too, because here a thai taxi driver is damaging the thai image.

It is time real actions are taken against taxi, tuk tuk, and minivan drivers. It seems to become a hobby of these transport drivers, to hit other way thinking people, even with clubs and steel bars.

It is...

if governor, minister of tourism, police or anyone else in charge care about tourism in Phuket and Thailand this scumbag taxi driver should lose his taxi license for life, and if the taxi is his private property, confiscate it because he use it to flee the crime scene. the injured human resource manager should sue this low life taxi driver in a civil case in a way to bankrupt him. if sentence for...

cancel his taxi permit for 3 months.if caught taxi-ing during this time, permanent cancellation and a month in jail.oh, but he confessed so he will get a 100 baht fine for fighting. abolish the \" confessing \" and punish to the full extent of the law.the judicial sytem is solely responsible for this behaviour as people know they get next to no punishment. anarchy is the result.

Miserable piece of shit...and exactly the reason people hate taxis. This angry old man is just one of thousands of the same ill-tempered a-holes that continue to blacken the eyes of Phuket as a tourist destination. Completely disgusting that no NCPO, military, police or any other Thai government office has reigned these animals in and put an end to this. Oh Mister Prime Minister...please sent in...
