The awards, which took place in Culver City, California, were hosted by actor Samuel L Jackson, who presented several world première trailers of video games to be released sometime in 2013.

The zombie franchise’s production company, Telltale Games, also took home the “Studio of the Year” award, the “Best Adapted Video Game” and “Best Downloadable Game” prize.

“Look, Walking Dead fans, this is obviously for you,” creator Robert Kirkman told reporters. “Thank you so much. You guys watch the TV show. You read the comics. You play the video games. You make all this possible.”

Borderlands 2 creator Gearbox Software took home the most awards at the VGAs, picking up “Best Shooter”, “Best Multiplayer Game”, “Best Performance by a Human Male” for Daemon Clarke, and the viewer-voted “Character of the Year” for Claptrap, the game’s robot character.

Journey, fresh off its Grammy nomination, won “Best Independent Game”, “Best PlayStation 3 Game”, and “Best Original Score”.

“We made Journey for you, to show that games can be something different,” said the game’s executive producer Robin Hunicke, “independent, experimental, moving, emotional, modern, inclusive, different.”

The award for “Best Sports Game” was no surprise: Fifa 13, while Need for Speed Most Wanted won the “Best Driving Game” award.

Halo 4 took home a few awards including “Best Xbox 360 Game” and “Best Graphics”.
Trailers for upcoming titles The Last Us, South Park: The Stick of Truth, Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2; BioShock Infinite; Dark Souls II and The Phantom Pain were featured throughout the show.
