The accident occurred at Khlong Yai Bridge on Road No. 36 in Tambon Choeng Noen, Muang district, at about 2pm, said Pol Capt Pichet Ingchaipoom of the Muang Rayong Police.

A Bangkok-registered Toyota Commuter driven by Arkom Kumkainam, 47, was carrying four British tourists and a woman tour guide, Kanokrat Chaicharoensawat, 44, when it skidded off the road, fell from the bridge and plummeted into the canal below.

Kanokrat, a Bangkok native, was found dead in the front seat when rescue workers arrived at the scene. Mr Arkom was badly hurt when he was rescued from the water and sent to Sri Rayong hospital. The four tourists – Richard Dixon, 54, his wife Carla, 41, daughter Sara, 18, and six-year-old son Elliott – were taken to Rayong hospital for treatment of minor injuries.

The cause of the accident is not known yet. Police later took Mr Dixon to Muang Rayong police station to try to find out more about the incident.

Sounds like another case of reckless driving causing death. Wonder what the penalty will be for the driver? Anyone know?

I just don't think there's any real deterrent at the moment that will make drivers think twice about the responsibility they have when driving on public roads and when driving vans or cars with tourists inside.

I keep seeing vans driving like crazy everyday within Phuket and speeding at up to what seems like 160km hr on the open roads.

It's like these van drivers think they're mafia and exempt from the road rules.

Joe 12 again, with his fast reading.
The driver is alive.

More death and carnage at the hands of another retarded and incompetent van driver. It will never stop, and no Thai officials seem concerned about it. Just dumbfounding negligence at all levels.

Kurt...the man has died. Leave him rest in peace. Just keep your silly comments to yourself.

On Photo we see the bridge has a fence which looks undamaged.
How this driver did fly over that fence?
Checked on driving license, drugs & alcohol test?
