The Oberon was carrying more than 1,000 tonnes of liquefied petroleum gas when it ran aground off Penghu, an archipelago in the middle of the Taiwan Strait, an official with Taiwan's transportation ministry told AFP.

All the crew, made up of 14 people from Thailand and two from Myanmar, were airlifted from the stricken vessel by coastguard and police helicopter, the official said.

Coastguards said they were closely monitoring the 2,700-tonne ship, which had been heading for Thailand when it grounded, but there had been no signs of maritime pollution.

The cause of the accident was not immediately clear.
