A committee has been set up to investigate hotels filmed releasing wastewater into Kata and Karon beaches.
Phuket Governor Tri Augkaradacha was made aware of the illegal dumping after it was recorded by a popular German television show.
German honorary consul Dirk Naumann informed the governor of the footage, which featured two Phuket hotels releasing wastewater into the ocean in the early hours of the morning.
“Vice-Governor Weerawat Janpen will head the committee, which will comprise of relevant environment officials,” Gov Tri said.
“I have made it very clear that these hotels will be investigated and warned, and if they continue, they will be shut down permanently.”
He added that apart from the hotels in Kata and Karon that featured in the German television show, complaints have also been made about hotels in the Patong area releasing waste into the ocean.
All beachfront hotels around the island will be checked for wastewater practices, Gov Tri said.
