News reports say police were alerted by the large pack of dogs, and searched the compound – revealing it had been filled with more than 100 tonnes of medical waste, including amputated body parts.

The warehouse owner had a contract with 300 hospitals and clinics to dispose of the medical waste by incineration, according to local news reports.

But the businessman started burying the waste to save money, and when he ran out of land he started using the warehouse in the southern Polish town of Katowice.

He now faces up to 12 years in prison for endangering public health and mistreating human remains.
