Capt Salawan Eadthrong an investigator from Kathu Police Station was informed at at 11:50am yesterday that a member of staff from the Kathu Shooting Range had been shot in the leg by a tourist at the range and that he had been taken for treatment at Vachira Hospital.

Staff from the shooting range told police that a tourist, Mr Emad Bin Hamed from Libya, had come to the range with his girlfriend and ordered 10 rounds to shoot.

Mr Hamed told staff that he would shoot five rounds and that his girlfriend would shoot the remaining five rounds.

When Mr Hamed had finished shooting his rounds he went to pass the gun to his girlfriend, however, Mr Chaiyasit Shusawad, who was looking after to couple, went to take the gun from Mr Hamed’s hand, and with Mr Hamed’s finger still on the trigger a bullet was shot which hit Mr Chaiyasit in the right leg.

Capt Salawan said that a record has been taken about the incident and further investigations will take place to see whether any charges will be made against Mr Hamed.

incorrect fire arm protocol results in these kind of ACCIDENTS.the tourist should consider paying the hospital fees as a mark of respect and fairness in this ACCIDENT.
certainly no " compensation".i suspect if the tourists was ACCIDENTALLY shot in the same situation that the police wouldnt consider charges for the OBVIOUS reasons.imparity of application of the law is the general rule in thailand. HOPEFULLY the shooting range has an insurance policy commensurate with the inherent dangers associated with firearms.Luckily it wasnt fatal.

I agree Kurt, the thumbs up pic is amusing, especially when Kuhn Chaiyasit could have just as easily been critically injured due to his neglectful, even culpable actions. He is responsible for the direction of the gun's discharge, not the patron. He'd be the one facing charges had the bullet hit someone else.

Kurt: Why is this amusing to you?
You are one sick bunny.

Fritz Pinguin: With respect for reaction on my comment, yes I find it funny that a 'professional shooting range instructor' get shot by a 'rainy day by passer' who probably never had a gun in his hand before.
It is actually a shooting instructor, who is in charge that unexperienced holiday shooters not hurt other shooters get shot himself.
If you not see the humor of it, I respect that.

But to be serious, the happening proves that shooting range safety protocol is far from what it should be.
Rule nr 1: never direct a loaded gun in direction of a other person.
Do you have any shooting experience, Fritz Pinguin?
At least this shooting instructor did not keep up that rule.
He just did give a thumbs-up while going to hospital.
Yes, I find that hilarious ( as nobody lucky wise real get hurt).
Perhaps think a bit more about it, Fritz Pinguin?

Thumbs-up to show how unprofessional he was?

The dumbest thing I find that police were serious to see or they could charge the tourist in this matter. That is absurd.
It was all under supervision/responsibility of the thai shooting range instructor, who took over the gun in a unprofessional way, otherwise he would not have been shot himself.
Anyway, just a shot in the leg, no drama.

@Kurt: While I enjoy your comments for the absurdity most times, I really don't find anything in this report which might make me laugh like you do.

hahaha, if this press report is correct than it is just funny thai.
Tourists, due to a very rainy day not go to beach.
What else shall we do? Oh, we can go shooting range.

At shooting range, tourists get a weapon in their hand, never had that before as fire arm laws in other countries are very strict, but on Phuket you get a firearm in your hand same way as you buy a ice cream, and there you go.

This shooting range should be charged due to there lack of shooting training/guiding.
If a shooting range gives a gun in hands of someone who that day doesn't go beach due to heavy rain, than shooting range staff must executive a safety fire arm protocol first.
Here it looks like the tourist was just handing back a empty coffee cup, but still some 'coffee' inside. hahahaha

Police should charge the shooting range, not that tourist.
But charging the tourist means: There we can get money out of it.

Is the staffer a licensed fire arm instructor?
If not, the Shooting range/arm instructor should be charged.

Glad I was not there. Great negative publicity for that shooting range.
Be careful, holiday makers, it could have been your leg, or worse, a bit higher, hahahahaha

Why on earth, if the reporter is correct as to what is said to have happened, would Mr. Hamed be considered for charges. Mr Chaiyasit, presumably an experienced firearms handler, TOOK the gun FROM Mr.Hamed prematurely in what logically can be considered to have been a careless manner. He is a staffer and should know better than to simply TAKE a loaded firearm from someone....he had an obligation to everyone present in the area to ensure that the exchange was done safely. He did NOT so ensure!! I am glad that it was he would suffered the injury and not one of the customers!!
