Called to the scene, Dr Kongkiat Kittiwattanawong from the Phuket Marine Biological Centre (PMBC) told The Phuket News, “The whale was very weak. He had a small wound, nothing serious, but we gave him a shot of antibiotics that should last about two weeks.”
The whale was carried off the beach into deeper water but continued to swim around nearby. “Our staff are keeping an eye on him. We’re a bit worried he may become stressed by the beach and water activities
“But we will make sure he does not come up on the beach again.”
Dwarf Sperm Whales are the smallest of the whale family, usually growing to no more than 2.7 metres in length.
They feed mainly on crabs and squid, and usually prefer deep water just off the continental shelf.
