Shining pearl

PHUKET: For the birthday of HM Queen Sirikit on August 12, which is also Mother’s Day in Thailand, the Indigo Pearl laid on a special one-off brunch that attracted several hundred people.

Lasting from midday to 3pm, the brunch served up a huge range of food, from giant prawns to sushi and sashimi (straight off the tuna, with freshly made wasabi), to a big grill with chicken, mutton, steak and an entire pig on a spit, to Indian curry and huge skewers of meat and vegetables, and a huge range of excellent desserts.

The brunch cost B2,150++ a head included free flow wine (three reds, three whites, a rosé and two sparkling wines) or Heineken draft or a choice of four cocktails; or B1,950 with soft drinks and juices. Children under five ate free, while those from five to 12 got a 50 per cent discount.

Thoroughly good value. Anyone who did not come away staggering under the weight of a full stomach and plentiful booze was, frankly, failing in his or her duty.

The resort will start running regular Sunday brunches at the start of the high season, around the end of November.
