Police send Chuwong case to prosecutors

BANGKOK: Police have wrapped up their investigation into the alleged premeditated murder of construction tycoon Chuwong Sae Tang, and have recommended indictment against retired senior police officer Banyin Tangpakorn, who is the only suspect in the case.

The 4,000-page case report was forwarded to public prosecutors at the Ratchada Criminal Court, Col Jirapob Puridet, chief of Crime Suppression Division’s subdivision 1, said yesterday (Sept 13). 

Col Jirapob said he was confident the evidence compiled would be enough to prove the 52-year-old retired police lieutenant colonel was guilty of the premeditated murder charge, adding the police investigation did not find any accomplice.

Mr Chuwong was found dead in Lt Col Banyin’s Lexus sport utility vehicle after it struck a roadside tree in Prawet district of Bangkok, on June 26 last year. Banyin, who was the driver, insisted they were friends and it was a fatal accident but police suspected he had Mr Chuwong murdered in the staged accident to cover up the crime.

The accident was similar to one in which Banyin’s former wife Rosarin was found dead in their vehicle in Nakhon Sawan province 25 years ago.

Col Jirapob said the statute of limitations for that case had expired but the incident was mentioned in Mr Chuwong’s case file.
