Police confirm Bangkok military hospital blast was a bomb, more than 20 injured

BANGKOK: A small bomb struck a Bangkok military hospital today (May 22), wounding more than 20 people, police said, three years to the day since the army seized power of the nation.

The blast struck a pharmacy inside a military hospital in Bangkok, stirring panic among patients and sending smoke into the corridors but causing only minor injuries.

“From the initial report it was a bomb… there are more than 20 people injured,” Deputy National Police Chief Gen Srivara Rangsibrahmanakul told reporters.

“It was likely to be in a package,” Gen Srivara said, adding that “battery and wires” were found at the scene.

The clinic in central Bangkok – King Mongkut Hospital – is often used by serving and retired members of Thailand’s armed forces.

Police said the hospital was not evacuated while bomb disposal officers scoured the scene.

Medical emergency staff at the Erawan Rescue Centre said 24 people were injured.

Police are already hunting suspects behind two other small blasts in recent weeks, but have given conflicting and contradictory information over the devices and likely suspects.

Last Monday a small pipe bomb detonated outside Bangkok’s National Theatre, close to the Grand Palace.

On a subsequent walkabout Bangkok’s city police chief declared the explosion was caused by a broken water pipe, only to later backtrack when other officials briefed it was a small homemade bomb.

In a statement on Facebook to mark the coup ousted fore Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra decried a lack of “concrete reform” warning three years of military rule risked becoming a “waste of time”.

Kurt...any explosive devise is big whether it injures one or 1000. Your concerns are focussed in the wrong direction. Investigations are difficult given that most evidence is destroyed in a bomb blast. You should be focussing your concerns that even in war, combatants do not target hospitals as the bomber has done on this occasion. Your bragging and glee about difficulties in investigation suggests collusion. If you are man enough you should come forward with any information.

The bomb did content a lot of spikes. It was not a 'small' bomb.
The 'downgrading' talks are strange.
Guess, same as the bomb happenings in Hua Hin and on Phuket last year, we never will hear who were behind it.
Officially it will remain unsolved cases.

Lucky 'only' 23 wounded. Is that true?
You even not can trust a BKK police chief anymore, with his broken water pipe story.
Their fantasy, to have immediately a false story. Amazing.
Where they learn that lying and denying ??

A small bomb? 23 Wounded people?
Guess it was a big bomb, but a not very professional one.
Who in BKK still trust this police chief after this?
