Preparations are being made to construct a new aquarium on a 60-rai parcel of land near the Green Man pub, on the way from Chalong Circle to Kata.
Behind the project is Daniel McDaniel, a Canadian investor who has lived in Phuket for six years. Construction will begin soon, he said, with the aim of completing the first phase, consisting of an aquarium and a small zoo, in 2012.
The entire project, expected to take five years to complete, will include marine animals shows, a “Jurassic” park, retail outlets and a five-star hotel.
Mr McDaniel declined to say what the entire project will cost, but revealed that the first phase alone has a budget of B900 million.
“We want to create something new for Phuket, something that can support Phuket tourism year-round,” he added.
Mr McDaniel met Phuket Governor Tri Augkaradacha yesterday to solicit his support for the project. The governor said he would be happy to back it.
“The legal issues are very important – work permits, permits to import exotic animals and so on,” Gov Tri said. “But we will support any [idea to improve Phuket].”
Mr McDaniel added that the aquarium would have a charitable side as well. Orphans, he said, will be allowed to visit the aquarium free at least once a month.
