Phuket Sailing Club seeks more hands on deck

SAILING: The beach at Ao Yon in Panwa hosted a flotilla of keen kids in small boats on Sunday (March 3), when the Phuket Sailing Club held an open day.

The club has taken over a long tradition of providing sailing training for local youngsters, who can make use of a variety of available boats to match their sailing skills, including Optimist and Topper dinghies.

The club also has the use of larger boats, including a 25-foot Platu Keelboat, 16-foot fast catamarans, Lasers, Topaz dinghies, and an Omega Sport with spinnaker, as well as kayaks and paddleboards for stand-up-paddling.

“We’ve got a lot of boats” says Phuket Sailing Club organiser Katy Gooch, adding that the group is now looking for more sailors to take them out on the water.

While in the past the club has been mainly focused on providing sailing training and sailing races for local children, Ms Gooch says the group wants to get more adults involved – in part to help get the boats out of the water at the end of the day.

Each year the club also takes a group of Phuket youngsters and adults to compete in the Top Of The Bay Regatta at Jomtien Beach near Pattaya.

The club holds sailing training each Sunday at its clubhouse beside the beach on the western arm of Ao Yon, a beautiful south-facing bay on the Panwa peninsula.
