Prison Director Rapin Nichanan announced today (June 13) that the prison had been successful in its tough stance on drugs and cell phones.

Mr Rapin said many of the prisoners were involved in constructive rehabilitation programmes, such as English classes, handicrafts and musical instrument lessons, to give them better job opportunities when they are released.

We hope this will give them a better chance in life, and that they will not want to come back to prison again,” he said.

There is also a women’s business group helping female prisoners learn new skills, Mr Rapin said.

I have faith in these projects: that they will help improve the image of the prison, and also help suppress the drug network by keeping the prisoners active. There are definitely no drugs in the prison.”

As of May 25, of the 1,845 prisoners inside the prison, around 85 per cent are there on drugs-related charges.
