Phuket Provincial Police Commander Maj Gen Choti Chavalviwat told The Phuket News today (December 24), “We began this drive to arrest drunk drivers, thieves and gangsters around Phuket on December 15. I believe we will wrap up many more cases.
“The New Year countdown will be celebrated in every part of Phuket. We will be paying particular attention to tourist areas such as Kathu and Kata. We will have police officers on duty non-stop [throughout the celebrations].”
He added that major checkpoints will be set up in a variety of places, along with subsidiary checkpoints that will be moved every two hours, starting on December 27 and ending January 3.
“At least 200 to 300 police will be allocated to the checkpoints. We are also looking for more volunteer police to support them. I believe that all individuals and officials will help each other.”
