Phuket Opinion: Money matters

PHUKET: In these tough economic times, money can quite often be too tight to mention. Yet over the last week it has seemed to permeate the news more than usual.

An armed bank robber stuck up a Kasikorn branch in Phuket Town and absconded with around B2.7 million. It only took around 60 seconds.

There was no security guard to bypass, no bullet-proof glass to smash and nobody or nothing that hindered the plucky gun-toting man in the slightest.

He was gone in a flash.

It was therefore hardly surprising that the the unfortunate incident took place, (in fact it later transpired that the bank robber had done it before elsewhere) but what was surprising was how quickly the police managed to catch up with the robber.

The police caught up with him within 48 hours and managed to recover B2.5 million of the haul.

Well done the Boys in Brown. Credit where credit is due.

Speaking of which, two Bulgarian men were arrested this week when they went to retrieve skimming equipment from, again, a Kasikorn ATM machine in Karon.

The cheeky chappies had installed a high-tech device that was to be used to copy ATM credit card details that could then be used to steal cash from the copied accounts.

Again they were foiled by the BIB (Boys in Brown) who swooped in and arrested them when they arrived to withdraw their illegal equipment.

On Wednesday a man was arrested for posing as a representative of a new police chief and extorting money 41 times from local businesses on behalf of the police department.
He said that the money he was collecting for was bouquets for powerful police officers. He amassed at least B1.5 million.

Again surprising and shocking. Surprising that so many businesses, restaurants and companies believed it was a) an acceptable request and b) it was plausible.

Money makes the world go round and makes people do stupid things, well at least to four people on the island this week.
